Morocco is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, with a documented presence spanning more than two thousand years. For centuries, Jews and Muslims lived side by side in the same cities, sharing neighborhoods, trades, and traditions that left a deep imprint on Moroccan culture. This 6-day tour has been designed to trace that legacy through synagogues, cemeteries, mellahs (the historic Jewish quarters), and museums that tell this shared story.
The journey begins in Casablanca, home to the only museum dedicated to Jewish culture in the entire Islamic world, and the Beth-El Synagogue, one of the country's most active. It continues to Essaouira, a coastal city where the Jewish community played a key commercial role and where the Bayt Dakira cultural center can be visited today. From there, the trip moves on to Marrakech, with its historic mellah and the Miaara Jewish cemetery, one of the largest and best-preserved in Morocco. Finally, the tour concludes in Fez, home to the oldest mellah in the country and the Ibn Danan Synagogue, restored and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This itinerary is designed both for travelers of Jewish faith who wish to connect with their roots and for anyone interested in history, interfaith coexistence, and Morocco's cultural heritage.
After pick-up at Casablanca airport, you will begin exploring the city's Jewish heritage. The Beth-El Synagogue, inaugurated in 1949, remains active today and is an excellent starting point for understanding Morocco's contemporary Jewish community.
Next, you will visit the Museum of Moroccan Judaism, located in the Oasis district and considered the only museum in the entire Islamic world dedicated exclusively to Jewish culture. Its galleries bring together ritual objects, documents, photographs, and testimonies that trace Moroccan Jewish life from the pre-Islamic era to the present day.
In the afternoon, free time to stroll through central Casablanca, including its Art Deco architecture, before checking into your hotel.
Driving distance: None (arrival day)
Driving time: Not applicable
Meals: None included
In the morning you will head to the Atlantic coast toward Essaouira, the former Mogador, a walled city that during the 18th and 19th centuries became a thriving hub of international trade, in large part thanks to Jewish families who acted as commercial intermediaries between Morocco and Europe.
On arrival, you will visit the mellah of Essaouira, located next to the port, and the Bayt Dakira cultural center ("the house of memory"), housed in a restored former synagogue that today serves as a space for interfaith dialogue and the historical memory of the city's Jewish community.
Driving distance: Approximately 350 km
Driving time: Approximately 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast by the fishing port, you will travel to Marrakech, where you will delve deeper into the city's Jewish heritage. You will visit the historic mellah of Marrakech, one of the first designated Jewish quarters in Morocco, founded in the 16th century, with its narrow streets, former silversmith and jeweler workshops run by Jewish artisans, and distinctive urban layout.
You will then visit the Miaara Jewish cemetery, one of the largest and best preserved in the country, with thousands of whitewashed tombs that reflect centuries of continuous Jewish presence in the city.
Driving distance: Approximately 190 km
Driving time: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
Meals: Breakfast
A full day dedicated to exploring Marrakech in depth: visits to former synagogues in the mellah (subject to availability and opening hours), a walk through the nearby souks where Jewish artisans traditionally worked, particularly in silversmithing and jewelry, and time to sample Judeo-Moroccan dishes such as dafina or the almond pastries typical of celebrations.
In the afternoon, free time to explore Jemaa el-Fna square or the city's gardens before dinner.
Driving distance: None (day in Marrakech)
Driving time: Not applicable
Meals: Breakfast
Travel north, crossing the Middle Atlas, to reach Fez, one of Morocco's most important imperial cities and home to the oldest mellah in the country, established in the 15th century. Unlike other mellahs, the one in Fez was located next to the royal palace, under the sultan's direct protection, reflecting the historic role of the Jewish community in the kingdom's administration and trade.
Arrival in Fez in the late afternoon and overnight stay at a charming riad in or near the medina.
Driving distance: Approximately 480 km
Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes
Meals: Breakfast
The final day is dedicated to exploring the mellah of Fez in depth. You will visit the Ibn Danan Synagogue, built in the 17th century and restored through an international conservation project, today recognized as part of the protected heritage of the Fez medina by UNESCO. Its arches, central bimah, and former ritual bath (mikveh) offer a glimpse into the Jewish religious life of centuries past.
You will also visit the old Jewish cemetery of Fez, with its distinctive terraced layout and whitewashed tombs, before transferring to the airport for your departure flight.
Driving distance: None (airport transfer)
Driving time: Depending on hotel location, approximately 20-30 minutes
Meals: Breakfast
