Crossing Morocco overland from Fes to Marrakech is already a memorable trip on its own โ add a night in the Sahara and it becomes something else entirely. This 3-day route links two of the country's most storied cities while carving out real time for the dunes of Erg Chebbi in between, making it a favorite for travelers who don't want to choose between culture and desert.
Along the way, you'll cross two mountain ranges in a single trip: the cedar-cloaked Middle Atlas, home to wild Barbary macaques, and the higher, starker High Atlas, crossed via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass. Few three-day routes anywhere in the world pack in this much topographic variety.
The desert night itself is the emotional centerpiece โ a camel ride into the dunes, a sunset that turns the sand copper and gold, and a camp dinner followed by hours of star-watching in silence that feels almost physical. By morning, the return leg takes you past Todra Gorge's towering rock walls and the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, two of southern Morocco's most photographed landmarks.
For travelers with just three days but a genuine desire to see both the north and the south, this route delivers an outsized amount of Morocco.
The journey begins with breakfast at your Fes riad, followed by an early departure toward the south. Our first proper stop is Ifrane, a tidy mountain town whose alpine-style architecture and cool climate have earned it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco."
From there, the road threads through the Middle Atlas, and we pause in the cedar forest near Azrou to look for Barbary macaques, a primate species found almost nowhere else on the planet outside this region.
Lunch is taken along the route, timed flexibly to match the group's pace. As Merzouga nears, the palm-lined Ziz Valley opens up below the road โ one of the more striking panoramas of the whole trip.
We reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, just in time for camels to carry you into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. A sunset stop atop a high dune precedes arrival at camp, where the evening unfolds with drumming, storytelling, and a sky thick with stars.
Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours 30 minutes Meals: Dinner
An early riser gets rewarded with a hushed desert sunrise. After breakfast at camp, you choose your return to Merzouga village โ camel or 4x4, whichever suits your mood.
From there, the drive continues toward Boumalne Dades via Rissani, Erfoud, and the towering Todra Gorge. Time it right โ a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday โ and you can wander through Rissani's lively traditional souk, a genuine slice of daily life in the south.
In Tinghir, a walk along the Todra riverbed beneath sheer canyon walls is one of the day's quieter highlights. By afternoon we reach Boumalne Dades, with a detour first to a viewpoint over the valley's famous "monkey fingers" rock formations.
The night is spent at a comfortable hotel deep in the Dades Valley.
Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Your final day starts with breakfast before a scenic drive through the Rose Valley and onward toward Ouarzazate, weaving through Berber villages that dot the roadside.
In Ouarzazate, an optional visit to Atlas Studios reveals sets and props from decades of international film productions โ or you can simply admire the exterior and continue.
A short 15-kilometer hop brings us to the celebrated Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, familiar to fans of Game of Thrones (as Yunkai) and Gladiator alike.
After the visit and lunch, the road climbs into the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, cresting at 2,260 meters before descending into Marrakech by late afternoon.
Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
Yes, it's designed as a one-way crossing between the two cities, with the desert built into the middle of the route.
For most travelers, yes โ it spreads the driving over more time and leaves room to properly enjoy Todra and Dades rather than rushing through.
It is, along with a sandboarding session on the dunes.
Night one is in the luxury desert camp; night two is at a hotel in the Dades Valley.
If your schedule lines up with a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, yes โ those are the regular market days.
Comfortable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, an evening layer, sturdy shoes, and a small daypack cover the basics.
It packs a city transfer and a desert night into three days efficiently, though 4- or 5-day versions allow a noticeably slower pace.
Spring and autumn tend to offer the most pleasant conditions, although the tour runs for much of the year.
