This is the fullest version of our Tangier-to-Marrakech route, built for travelers who want to actually settle into each place rather than pass through it. Eight days is enough time not just to see Erg Chebbi's dunes on the way past, but to base yourself there for a second full day โ visiting a nomadic family, exploring hidden corners of the erg by 4x4, and listening to Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia โ before continuing the loop back to Marrakech.
The rest of the trip keeps the depth that makes this itinerary worthwhile: Chefchaouen's blue lanes, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, imperial Meknes, a full guided day in the Fez medina, the Middle Atlas cedar forests, the Todra Gorge, the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, and a closing day exploring Marrakech's palaces and souks with a local guide.
This same route can also start from Casablanca, and as always, it's fully adaptable โ tell us what you'd like more or less of, and we'll rework the plan.
Pickup at the airport, port, or your hotel in Tangier, then a climb into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Free time in the afternoon to explore its blue-painted lanes and settle into a riad for the night.

The route rises through the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, with its distinctly Alpine architecture, and cedar forests where Barbary macaques are frequently spotted. After lunch, the Ziz Valley unfolds toward the Sahara. In Merzouga, camels carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, followed by dinner and Berber music at a luxury desert camp.
Driving distance: Approximately 460 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
A second full day around the dunes, without the pressure of packing up and moving on. After sunrise, we visit Khamlia to hear live Gnawa music, then head out by 4x4 toward M'Fis for a change of scenery among the erg's quieter dunes. Along the way we stop at a nomadic encampment for tea and conversation. The afternoon is free at your riad, with optional activities such as quad biking or a walk on the dunes. Dinner and overnight in Merzouga.
Driving distance: Approximately 60 km Driving time: Approximately 2 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
