5-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Overview

Five days is enough time to stop rushing and actually feel Morocco's south change beneath your wheels โ€” from the red ramparts of Marrakech to a wall of orange dunes at the edge of the Sahara. This circular route climbs over the High Atlas, drops into a string of river valleys lined with kasbahs, and ends with two full days built around Erg Chebbi, so the desert isn't just a night stop but the heart of the trip.

Rather than racing from A to B, this itinerary gives you a slower rhythm: an extra day around Merzouga dedicated purely to exploring, a night in a riad by the dunes instead of only in a tented camp, and enough flexibility along the road to pull over whenever a view demands it. You'll ride camels into the dunes, share tea with a nomadic family, and fall asleep to Berber drumming under more stars than most travelers have ever seen at once.

By the time you're dropped back at your Marrakech riad on day five, you'll have crossed one of Africa's great mountain passes, walked beneath 300-meter canyon walls, and slept in the open Sahara โ€” a far deeper introduction to southern Morocco than a shorter loop can offer.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas - Ait Ben Haddou - Dades Valley

We collect you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the morning and head south, watching the flat plains give way to the folds of the High Atlas. The road climbs steadily to the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, over 2,200 meters above sea level, with pull-offs at several viewpoints where the mountains fall away in every direction โ€” this is one of the most scenic drives in Morocco, and we take it slowly.

After lunch in Ait Ben Haddou or nearby Ouarzazate, the route continues through Skoura, an oasis town where you can step inside Kasbah Amridil, one of the finest fortified adobe homes left in the south, and through the Valley of the Roses, which turns a soft pink in spring bloom. By late afternoon we reach the Dades Gorges, known for the strange, weathered rock towers locals call the "monkey fingers." Dinner and the night are spent at a hotel overlooking the valley.

Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Dades Valley - Todra Gorge - Merzouga

After breakfast we drive to Tinghir, an oasis town built around old kasbahs that once housed both Berber and Jewish families, side by side. From there it's a short hop to the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise 300 meters straight up on either side of a narrow river โ€” a short walk along the canyon floor puts the scale of it into perspective.

Lunch is taken en route as the landscape thins into pre-Saharan scrubland. Arriving in Merzouga, camels and their handlers will be waiting to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Partway across, we stop on a high crest to watch the sun go down and try a bit of sandboarding before continuing to the desert camp.

Dinner is served at the camp as darkness falls, followed by Berber drumming around the fire beneath an extraordinarily clear sky.

Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3: Desert exploration day

Set an alarm for sunrise if you can โ€” watching the dunes shift from grey to gold is worth the early start. After breakfast, a 4x4 collects you for a full day dedicated to the desert beyond the dunes.

First stop is a nomadic encampment, where a family still living the traditional Sahara lifestyle welcomes you into their tent for mint tea and conversation about life far from any town. From there we visit an abandoned mining settlement, once home to workers extracting galena ore from the surrounding hills, before continuing to Khamlia, a small village settled by musicians descended from sub-Saharan communities, where you can hear live Gnawa rhythms and have lunch at a local spot.

If seasonal rains have filled it, we make a stop at the Bird Lake on the way back before returning to your riad in Merzouga for the night.

Driving distance: Approximately 57 km Driving time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4: Merzouga - Rissani - Agdez - Ouarzazate

Another chance for a desert sunrise, this time from the terrace of your riad. After breakfast we head to Rissani, a former royal capital where a genuinely local souk still trades in spices, dates, and daily goods. From there, the road follows the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, with a stop in Agdez to take in views over its palm groves and kasbahs before arriving in Ouarzazate by late afternoon.

Driving distance: Approximately 370 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours 20 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5: Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou - Telouet - Marrakech

Ouarzazate has earned its nickname as the "Hollywood of Africa," and after breakfast we visit the Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Studios, where sets from decades of international productions still stand.

From there, we return to Ait Ben Haddou, taking time to properly explore the fortified ksar we only glimpsed on day one โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and the backdrop for films like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

The final leg climbs back over the High Atlas, with a stop at the striking hilltop Kasbah of Telouet, former seat of the Glaoui clan, before descending into Marrakech, where we drop you back at your accommodation.

Driving distance: Approximately 203 km Driving time: Approximately 3 hours 52 minutes Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the tour start and finish in Marrakech?

Yes. It's a circular route: you leave Marrakech, travel through the Merzouga desert region, and return to the same city five days later.

How much time do we actually spend in the desert?

Two nights around Merzouga in total โ€” one in a tented camp among the dunes and one in a riad in the village โ€” plus a full day dedicated to exploring the surrounding area.

Do we visit a nomadic family?

Yes, this is one of the highlights of day three, when you're welcomed into a tent for tea and a conversation about life in the Sahara.

Is the camel ride included?

Yes, the ride through the Erg Chebbi dunes on day two is included in the price.

What kind of accommodation should I expect?

Hotels or riads on the road nights, plus one night in a private tent at a desert camp.

Is this a good option if I don't want to feel rushed?

Yes โ€” compared with shorter 2 or 3-day loops, five days allows an entire extra day around Merzouga and more relaxed stops throughout.

What should I pack?

Comfortable layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, a warmer layer for cold desert nights, and a small daypack for the camp.

When is the best time to travel this route?

Spring and autumn bring the mildest temperatures for both the mountain passes and the desert stretches.

Important Notes

  • Stop order may shift slightly depending on weather, season, or road conditions.
  • Some optional entrance fees are not included in the tour price.
  • Guides in languages other than Spanish should be requested ahead of time.
