This is the unhurried way to travel between Marrakech and Fes โ a five-day route built for people who'd rather sit with a place for a while than tick it off a list. Instead of racing straight through the south, the itinerary carves out time for a mountain family living inside cave dwellings, a full day dedicated purely to exploring the desert around Merzouga, and an evening spent with a nomadic Saharan family over tea.
Traveling throughout in comfortable 4x4 vehicles, you'll climb the High Atlas, drop into canyon country carved by the Dades and Todra rivers, and cross into the Sahara proper for a camel trek and a night beneath one of the clearest skies in Morocco. What separates this route from a faster transfer between the two cities is the space it leaves for genuine, unscripted encounters along the way.
It is, in short, a slow journey through fast-changing landscapes โ mountains give way to rose valleys, rose valleys give way to canyons, and canyons give way to dunes, with real conversations woven in at every stage.
Your five-day journey from Marrakech to Fes begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or riad. As the route climbs out of the city, the High Atlas Mountains rise ahead, with several stops along the way to take in the scenery and explore the historic Telouet Kasbah, former stronghold of the powerful El Glaoui family.
By midday you'll reach Ait Ben Haddou, where there's time for lunch before stepping inside its fascinating fortified kasbah โ a site that has served as a backdrop for films and series including The Mummy, Gladiator, and parts of Game of Thrones.
From there, the route continues to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa" and home to the famous Atlas Studios, among the largest film complexes in the world. You can choose between exploring the studio sets or visiting Taourirt Kasbah, another historic fortress linked to the El Glaoui family, before checking into your hotel for a relaxed evening and dinner.
Driving distance: Approximately 204 km Driving time: Approximately 4 hours Meals: Dinner
After breakfast, we head to Skoura, an oasis spanning more than 4,000 hectares of palm groves that once served as a key stopping point for caravans linking the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts with sub-Saharan Africa. In Skoura, the beautifully preserved Kasbah Amridil offers a window into daily life within its walls more than 300 years ago.
From there, we continue to Kelaat M'Gouna, home to the celebrated Rose Valley, where spring travelers will find roses in full bloom.
The route then winds through charming Berber villages to Bou Tharar, followed by an off-road stretch into the Dades Valley. Along the way, we stop to visit a Berber family living inside a mountain cave, where you'll be welcomed with tea and a firsthand look at a way of life shaped entirely by the surrounding landscape.
After checking into your hotel in the Dades Valley, you can choose between a peaceful walk through the valley or a guided hike through the Monkey Fingers Canyon, known for its unusual rock formations, narrow passageways, and dramatic views, before a relaxed dinner and rest.
Driving distance: Approximately 144 km Driving time: Approximately 3 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
After breakfast, the journey continues toward the desert of Merzouga, with a stop along the way to walk through the Todra Gorge and take in sweeping views over the oasis of Tinghir.
Arriving in Merzouga by afternoon, a genuine camel trek carries you across the dunes, ending with a spectacular sunset from a high dune. At the luxury camp, a welcome tea precedes some time to settle into your private tent, followed by dinner and an evening around the campfire, with Berber drumming and song beneath a sky full of stars.
Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
An early start rewards you with a striking sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, the day is dedicated entirely to exploring the desert, beginning with a visit to Khamlia, a small village known for its distinctive Gnawa music, played by musicians with roots in sub-Saharan Africa. From there, an off-road stretch leads to M'Fis, an abandoned settlement once known for its galena mines, a mineral traditionally used in cosmetics.
Later, a visit to a family living near the dunes of Erg Chebbi offers a genuine look at nomadic life and traditional Berber hospitality, far removed from modern conveniences.
After lunch, the afternoon shifts to a riad overlooking the golden dunes, with time to rest or swim before another sunset walk toward the sand. If you'd rather stay closer to the dunes, an extra night at the camp instead of the riad can be arranged โ just let us know when booking.
Driving distance: Approximately 57 km Driving time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
One last chance for an early desert sunrise, this time enjoyed from the comfort of your riad terrace.
After a hearty breakfast, the drive to Fes begins, with stops along the way at the scenic Ziz Valley, a cedar forest near Azrou where Barbary macaques are sometimes spotted, and the tidy alpine-style town of Ifrane, often nicknamed Morocco's "Little Switzerland."
You'll arrive in Fes by late afternoon, with a drop-off at the point closest to your hotel or riad, bringing this unhurried five-day route between Marrakech and Fes to a close.
Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
