Discover the most untouched and untamed face of the Sahara with this 3-day tour from Marrakech to the spectacular dunes of Erg Chegaga. Unlike other, more accessible desert destinations, Erg Chegaga offers an immense, wild sand sea that can only be reached off-road by 4x4.
This private adventure will lead you across the High Atlas Mountains, past the historic Kasbah of Telouet and the UNESCO-listed Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, down the palm-filled Draa Valley, and to the ancient Quranic library and green pottery workshops in Tamegroute. The journey culminates with a night in a luxury camp surrounded by dunes rising up to 300 meters high.
We set off early from Marrakech in a comfortable, private air-conditioned vehicle. Climbing into the High Atlas Mountains, we cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), taking in panoramic views of deep valleys and traditional stone Berber villages.
Our first major stop is the crumbling yet majestic Kasbah of Telouet, the former palace of the Glaoui family. From there, we follow the old caravan route along the Ounila Valley to reach Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has served as the backdrop for films like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia.
After lunch, we continue through Ouarzazate and cross the Tizi n'Tinififft pass toward the valley town of Agdz. Here, the landscape changes dramatically as we enter the palm-lined Draa Valley, a green oasis stretching for miles alongside ancient mud-brick kasbahs. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Zagora, where we'll have dinner and spend the night in a charming local riad.
Driving distance: Approximately 360 km
Driving time: Approximately 7 hours
Meals: Dinner
After breakfast, we head south to Tamegroute. Here, we visit the village's historic Quranic library, which preserves illuminated manuscripts dating back to the 12th century, and see the traditional artisans producing its famous green-glazed pottery.
The paved road ends at M'hamid, the last outpost of the valley. Here, we switch to a rugged 4x4 vehicle to begin the off-road portion of our journey. We travel over dry gravel plains (hamada), pass small sandy ridges, and stop for lunch under the palms of the Sacred Oasis, a natural spring flowing in the middle of the desert.
In the afternoon, the landscape opens up into the massive dune field of Erg Chegaga. Climbing up to 300 meters high, these dunes are remote, wild, and incredibly quiet. You'll mount a camel and ride up to the crest of a high dune to watch the sun sink below the horizon. Dinner will be served in a luxury desert camp, followed by traditional Berber music around the campfire under a brilliant canopy of stars.
Driving distance: Approximately 150 km (including 60 km of off-road desert tracks)
Driving time: Approximately 4 hours in the 4x4
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Waking up early to climb the fine-sand ridges is highly recommended to see a striking golden sunrise over Erg Chegaga. After breakfast at the camp, we depart the dunes in the 4x4, taking an alternative western route.
We cross the wide, flat bed of Lake Iriki, a vast dry salt flat known for its unique desert mirages and prehistoric fossils. Following the historic tracks of the Paris-Dakar rally, we arrive in the desert outpost of Foum Zguid, where the paved road begins again.
Our next stop is Taznakht, a town renowned for its traditional hand-woven Berber carpets. After a lunch break, we head back up the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass once more to arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon/early evening. We will drop you off at your riad or hotel.
Driving distance: Approximately 400 km
Driving time: Approximately 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast
Erg Chegaga is much more remote, less crowded, and less developed than Erg Chebbi. There are no paved roads leading to the dunes and no permanent hotels at the edge of the sand sea. Access is strictly by 4x4, offering a quieter, wilder, and more adventurous desert experience.
The highway portions of the tour are typically driven in a comfortable private sedan, van, or SUV. The off-road desert crossing (from M'hamid to Erg Chegaga and out to Foum Zguid) is done entirely in a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle equipped for deep sand.
Even in this remote location, the camps offer great comfort: spacious private tents with proper beds, private en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, electricity, and common dining tents decorated with Berber carpets.
Due to the long driving hours and bumpy off-road 4x4 terrain, we do not recommend this tour for children under 5. It is an excellent adventure for older kids.
We recommend bringing lightweight layers for the day, sturdy closed-toed shoes for walking on sand, a hat, and sunscreen. Evenings in the desert can get very cold, so packing a warm jacket or fleece is essential.
