Eight days gives this grand traverse of Morocco just enough breathing room to add something the shorter versions skip entirely: a full guided day in Marrakech at the very end, instead of a rushed half-day before the flight home. The route itself is the classic crossing — Casablanca's Atlantic skyline, the blue hillside town of Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the scholarly medina of Fez, a night deep in the Sahara, and a mountain crossing into Marrakech — but with an extra day, nothing has to be compressed.
That extra time shows up in the details: a relaxed camel ride timed for sunset rather than squeezed between other stops, a proper look at the Todra Gorge's towering walls, and enough daylight left on the Marrakech day to wander the souks after the guided tour instead of rushing to the airport. It's the same unforgettable landscape shift — mountains to cedar forest to golden dunes to red-walled medina — just given the space it deserves.
By the final night in a Marrakech riad, you'll have crossed the Rif and the High Atlas, ridden into Erg Chebbi at sunset, slept under a genuinely dark desert sky, and explored two of Morocco's four imperial cities in real depth.
Your eight-day journey begins with a warm welcome at Mohammed V International Airport. We start with the Hassan II Mosque, whose 210-meter minaret is the tallest of any religious building outside Mecca, and whose oceanfront setting and intricate zellige tilework make it one of the country's defining landmarks.
From there, we continue to Rabat, Morocco's capital, to see the unfinished 12th-century Hassan Tower and the whitewashed Kasbah of the Udayas. If your flight lands late at night, we can arrange a direct transfer to your Casablanca hotel instead, beginning the route the following morning. Overnight in Rabat.
Driving distance: Approximately 128 km Driving time: Approximately 2 hours 10 minutes Meals: None included
After breakfast, the road climbs into the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen, a roughly four-hour drive through gentle hills and small traditional villages. Founded in 1471, its medina has been painted in shades of blue for generations, making it one of the most photogenic towns in Morocco.
You'll have the afternoon free to wander the narrow streets, browse the souks, and relax over Moroccan cuisine in one of the town's many cafés. Overnight in Chefchaouen.
Driving distance: Approximately 254 km Driving time: Approximately 4 hours Meals: Breakfast
Leaving the Rif behind, we cross rural farmland toward Volubilis, once the westernmost outpost of the Roman Empire, remarkably preserved with mosaic floors still visible after nearly two thousand years in the open air.
From there we continue to Meknes, the least visited of Morocco's four imperial cities, to see the ornately decorated Bab el Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. After lunch, we finish the day in Fez, checking into a riad in the heart of the medina.
Driving distance: Approximately 260 km Driving time: Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
A full day exploring Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital with a local guide. We begin at the golden gates of the Royal Palace, then enter the medina — the largest car-free urban space on Earth — to see the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 and recognized as the world's oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning, the finely carved Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the open-air Chouara Tannery.
We continue into the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, before climbing to an ancient fortress for sweeping views over the entire medina. Overnight in Fez.
Meals: Breakfast
We head south toward the Sahara, stopping first in Ifrane, an orderly alpine-style town often nicknamed Morocco's "Little Switzerland." From there we climb into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where wild Barbary macaques are frequently spotted, before a lunch stop en route to the palm-fringed Ziz Valley.
Arriving in Merzouga by afternoon, camels are waiting to carry you into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, stopping on a high ridge to watch the sunset turn the sand gold and red. Dinner and Berber drumming around the campfire follow at a luxury desert camp under a spectacular night sky.
Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Watching sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi is well worth the early start. After breakfast, we return to Merzouga by camel or 4x4 and continue toward Rissani, ancestral home of Morocco's royal family, where a traditional souk operates on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
The road climbs toward the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise up to 300 meters above a narrow river — a short walk along the canyon floor puts the scale into perspective. Continuing toward Dades, the strange, wind-carved "monkey finger" rock formations line the valley on the approach to the hotel where you'll spend the night.
Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Today's route begins with a drive to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa," where you can optionally visit Atlas Studios to see famous film sets. We continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar of red-earth kasbahs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, used as a backdrop in films from Gladiator to Game of Thrones.
After lunch, the road climbs over the High Atlas Mountains with sweeping views along the way, descending into Marrakech by late afternoon. After checking into your riad, take a quiet evening stroll toward Jemaa el-Fna to feel the city come alive after dark.
Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
Your final day begins with breakfast at the riad before a local guide leads you through Marrakech's landmarks: the lively Jemaa el-Fna Square, the ornate Bahia Palace, the excavated Saadian Tombs, the finely carved Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the towering Koutoubia Mosque.
After lunch, we visit the cobalt-blue Majorelle Garden, a striking counterpoint to the medina's earth tones. If your flight departs the same day, we'll arrange your transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport or Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, closing out this eight-day journey across Morocco.
