10-Day Casablanca to Marrakech Desert Tour

Overview

Ten days is a rare gift when it comes to Morocco โ€” enough time to move through the country the way it deserves to be seen, without rushing from one highlight straight to the next. This route begins on the Atlantic coast in Casablanca, climbs north into the blue-washed hills of Chefchaouen, threads through Roman ruins and imperial capitals on its way to Fez, then turns south across the Middle Atlas toward the Sahara, before looping back through canyon country and the High Atlas into Marrakech. It is, in every sense, a grand tour.

What makes ten days different from a shorter loop isn't just distance covered โ€” it's the pauses. A full day inside the walled medina of Fez with a local guide. A second day around Merzouga dedicated entirely to the desert, its nomadic communities, and its music, rather than a single overnight stop. Room to actually stand inside the Todra Gorge and feel the scale of its 300-meter walls, rather than glimpse them from the road. Morocco rewards travelers who slow down, and this itinerary is built around that idea.

By the time you reach Marrakech's ochre ramparts on day nine, you'll have crossed the Rif and the Atlas twice, ridden a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, shared tea with a nomadic family, and walked streets that range from Roman colonnades to fortified kasbah walls nearly a thousand years old. Few single trips manage to hold that much of Morocco at once.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Casablanca - Rabat

Arrival at Mohammed V International Airport, where your driver will be waiting. Before leaving the city, we stop at the Hassan II Mosque, perched dramatically over the Atlantic on reclaimed land โ€” its 210-meter minaret is the tallest religious structure in the world outside Mecca, and part of the roof famously opens to the sky.

From there we head north to Rabat, Morocco's political capital, to see the unfinished 12th-century Hassan Tower and the peaceful Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified blue-and-white quarter overlooking the mouth of the Bou Regreg River. Overnight in Rabat.

Driving distance: Approximately 128 km Driving time: Approximately 2 hours 10 minutes Meals: None included

Day 2: Rabat - Chefchaouen

After breakfast, we drive north into the folds of the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen, Morocco's famous blue city. Founded in 1471 as a fortress against Portuguese incursions, its medina has been painted in every imaginable shade of blue for generations. The rest of the day is free to wander the alleyways, browse handwoven textiles and goat cheese stalls, and settle into the town's unhurried mountain rhythm. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

Driving distance: Approximately 254 km Driving time: Approximately 4 hours Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Chefchaouen - Volubilis - Meknes - Fez

Leaving the blue city behind, we descend toward the fertile plains around Volubilis, once the westernmost outpost of the Roman Empire and still remarkably intact, with mosaic floors that have survived nearly two thousand years in the open air. From there, a short drive brings us to Meknes, the least visited of Morocco's four imperial cities, where the monumental Bab el Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail speak to the ambitions of the sultan who built it into a 17th-century capital to rival Versailles. We finish the day in Fez. Overnight in Fez.

Driving distance: Approximately 260 km Driving time: Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Fez (full guided day)

A full day with a local guide inside the world's largest car-free urban area. We begin at the ornate golden doors of the Royal Palace, then enter the medina proper โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 โ€” to see the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 and recognized as the oldest continuously operating institution of higher learning on Earth, the delicately carved Al-Attarine Madrasa, the restored Nejjarine Fountain, and the open-air vats of the Chouara Tannery, still worked by hand exactly as it was centuries ago. We continue into the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, before climbing to a hilltop fortress for a sweeping view over the entire medina. Overnight in Fez.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5: Fez - Ifrane - Middle Atlas - Ziz Valley - Merzouga

We leave Fez heading south, passing through Ifrane, a tidy alpine-style town often nicknamed Morocco's "Little Switzerland," before climbing into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where troops of wild Barbary macaques often appear along the roadside. After lunch on the road, the landscape opens into the palm-lined Ziz Valley on the final approach to Merzouga. Camels are waiting to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, followed by dinner and Berber music around the fire at a luxury desert camp.

Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6: Merzouga and surroundings

An early start rewards you with sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, a full day exploring the desert beyond Erg Chebbi begins with a visit to Khamlia, home to musicians of sub-Saharan heritage who perform hypnotic Gnawa rhythms, followed by a 4x4 excursion across rugged desert tracks to M'Fis. Along the way you'll meet a nomadic family who still live according to the traditional rhythms of the Sahara, sharing mint tea and conversation. The afternoon is free at your riad, with optional quad biking or a walk out to the dunes for those who want more time in the sand. Dinner and overnight in Merzouga.

Driving distance: Approximately 57 km Driving time: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7: Merzouga - Rissani - Todra Gorges - Dades Gorges

We depart Merzouga for Rissani, ancestral home of Morocco's ruling Alaouite dynasty and, on market days (Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday), a genuinely local souk worth wandering. From there the road climbs toward the Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise up to 300 meters on either side of a narrow river channel โ€” a short walk along the canyon floor is enough to feel its scale. We continue to the Dades Gorges, known for the strange, wind-carved rock towers locals call the "monkey fingers." Overnight at a hotel overlooking the valley.

Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8: Dades - Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou - High Atlas - Marrakech

This morning we head to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa" for its film studios that have produced everything from historical epics to television series. We continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar of red-mud kasbahs that has stood along the old caravan route since at least the 17th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. After lunch, the road climbs over the High Atlas Mountains, with sweeping viewpoints along the way, before descending into Marrakech. Overnight in a riad.

Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast

Day 9: Marrakech (full guided day)

A full day exploring the Red City with a local guide, starting at the lively Jemaa el-Fna Square, then continuing to the ornately decorated Bahia Palace, the excavated Saadian Tombs, the finely carved Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the towering Koutoubia Mosque, whose minaret has defined the Marrakech skyline since the 12th century. The afternoon brings a visit to the cobalt-blue Majorelle Garden, followed by free time to get lost in the souks โ€” copper lanterns, leather goods, spices, and carpets stacked floor to ceiling. Overnight in Marrakech.
