Argan Hammam and Massage

The hammam is one of Morocco's oldest living institutions โ€” a communal steam-and-scrub ritual dating back to the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties that built Marrakech's great mosques, and still a weekly fixture in neighbourhoods across the city. Paired with a massage using argan oil, pressed by Berber cooperatives from a tree that grows almost nowhere else on earth, it becomes one of the most grounding, genuinely Moroccan things you can do on a trip here.

What to expect

You're welcomed with mint tea and given the basics: towels, slippers, savon beldi (an olive-and-eucalyptus black soap), and a kessa exfoliating glove. From there you move through the hammam's three rooms โ€” a cool entry space to acclimatise, a warm room around 35โ€“40ยฐC where the black soap is left to work into the skin, and a hot, steam-filled room at 45โ€“55ยฐC where a professional works the kessa over your whole body. The exfoliation is thorough and surprisingly effective; within minutes dead skin lifts away in a way no home scrub manages.

A ghassoul clay mask โ€” mixed with rose water and argan oil โ€” follows, drawing out impurities before it's rinsed off. Then comes the massage itself: 30โ€“45 minutes of pure argan oil worked into the whole body using a blend of Swedish and Berber pressure techniques, timed for when muscles are already loose from the heat. The ritual closes with tea and quiet rest, a pause most guests are in no hurry to end.

  • Skin left visibly smoother for days afterward
  • A quiet closing period with mint tea

  • Duration: About 2 hours for the complete ritual

  • Good to know: Private couples' sessions are available; mention any skin sensitivity when booking so the exfoliation can be adjusted

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a hotel spa hammam?

A traditional hammam follows the full ritual โ€” black soap, kessa, ghassoul โ€” at authentic temperatures with specialised staff. Hotel spas tend to offer a softer, more diluted version at a higher price.

Is it suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin?

The deep exfoliation and ghassoul clay generally suit acne-prone skin well. If your skin is very sensitive, mention it beforehand so the intensity can be adjusted.

When during a trip should I book this?

Many travellers schedule it mid-trip, once a few days of walking and exploring have left some fatigue to work out โ€” the timing tends to maximise the restorative effect.

Can I do the hammam without the massage?

Yes, the hammam ritual is available on its own as well as combined with the massage โ€” just let us know your preference when booking.

How long does everything take?

Around two hours total: roughly 30โ€“40 minutes in the hammam, 15 minutes for the ghassoul mask, 30โ€“45 minutes of massage, and a final rest with tea.
